Guy Sebastian - Tonight Again (Australia) 2015 Eurovision Song Contest

Some people were taken aback when they heard the news that Australia will perform in this year's Eurovision Song Contest. However, considering most Australians come form a European background, it only seems fitting. Israel is not a European country but has participated in the contest 37 times since 1973. Eurovision is a huge hit in Australia. For over 35 years SBS has been broadcasting the event to millions of Australian viewers on free to air television. In some European countries it is only possible to watch Eurovision on cable television.

Whatever you think of Australia's participation this year, it is nice that Australia was invited to perform given its large and loyal fan base. There has been much speculation as to what song Guy Sebastian would sing and I must admit I am pleasantly surprised. Many Estonians who have left comments on Facebook also agree it's quite a good, upbeat song. Good luck to him!

Traditional Estonian Easter Recipe 'Pasha'

I was in search of a good Pasha recipe online this morning when this one caught my eye. I thought the cute marzipan figurines on top were an absolutely delightful addition! Pasha is a traditional Easter dessert, commonly eaten in Estonia, Finland and Russia. As you can see from the photograph below, you can be quite creative with the topping!

In Memoriam Estelle Emmett

Last night I was very sad to learn about the passing of Estelle Emmett. She was born in Estonia in 1925 and was a long time friend of my family - a good friend of my grandfather Alexander and life long best friend of his cousin Dorothea Niggul. Estelle and her family left Tallinn in 1941, around the same time as my family fled Estonia. After the war she spent many years living in Germany. She worked in publishing in Munich and married an American solider named Ben. They later settled in New Mexico, USA, where they spent the remainder of their lives.

I had the privilege of making Estelle's acquaintance a few years ago. She was absolutely delighted to hear from me and to recount her childhood memories in Estonia. She knew my family extremely well and gave glowing praise to my great uncle and aunt Karl and Ellinor Niggul who she said were very noble and upstanding people. Estelle also described my great, great grandmother Helene to me - the only person I've ever spoken to who remembers her personally. Estelle also confided that it was my grandfather Alexander who gave her her first kiss!

After our initial introduction, Estelle and I kept in regular contact, sharing stories and photographs. Her enthusiasm for life, her homeland and nature was palpable. She was a lovely lady and no doubt will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Confirmation used to be a major milestone in a young Estonian's life.
Preparations were planned months in advance.

I am absolutely thrilled to announce that my cousin Katriin Laanet and dance partner Mikk Rajaver won the Casa de Baile salsa dancing competition in Tallinn on Tuesday night.  What began as an exercise to overcome the fear of public dancing soon bloomed into a newfound passion.
