Estonian Writer - Peeter Lindsaar

Estonia has produced many great writers. Anton Hansen Taamsaare, Jaan Kross and Oskar Luts have all made outstanding contributions to Estonian literature. Perhaps one of the most famous Estonian writers who produced many acclaimed works whilst in exile is Peeter Lindsaar. He began his literary career in Australia during the 1950s and published ten books which have won praise in Estonian communities throughout the world.

Peeter Lindsaar had an eventful life which is often reflected in his writings.

Brief biography
Peeter Lindsaar, the son of a farmer, was born in Võrumaa in 1906. He completed his secondary education in Valga in 1927 before entering military service. In 1931 he graduated from the Tallinn Officers' College as a second lieutenant of infantry. From 1937-1938 Peeter studied at Tartu University in the faculty of philosphy and then from 1938-1941 he studied law. In 1941 he returned to active military service until the end of the Second World War. From 1947-1948 he lived in Germany and worked as a journalist for Estonian newspapers before emigrating to Australia in January 1949.  Peeter had a very loving relationship with his wife but unfortunately they were unable to have children. He retired in 1971 and died in Sydney in 1990.

Peeter Lindsaar has been critically acclaimed as one of the most outstanding Estonian writers in exile. Some of his works have been translated into English, Latvian, German, Finnish, Lithuanian and Dutch.


     

    

       











I'm quite fond of the work of Peeter Lindsaar. Perhaps it's because he's my grandmother's cousin!
