Countdown to Christmas

The Fourth Sunday of Advent took place yesterday which means Christmas will soon be upon us.  Now is the time to make our final preparations for the most joyous and widely celebrated day of the year. This year I am celebrating Christmas with my family in Australia and the weather here is a stark contrast to how it is in Estonia. I can only imagine how my Estonian grandparents felt when they experienced their very first summertime Christmas in Australia. It gets so hot here!

The traditional Christmas meal for Estonians consists of seven dishes. Christmas staples include roast pork, potatoes, sauerkraut, black bread and verivorst - blood sausage. Side dishes, usually a variety of salads, often contain a lot of sour cream and dill. Sweet treats include piparkoogid (gingerbread) and mandarines are often eaten at Christmas time.

Christmas is such a wonderful time of year, not long to go now!
