Ilus Eesti, beautiful Estonia. My family's homeland. Estonia's countryside and people have an endearing gentleness about them which you fall in love with slowly and imperceptibly. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Estonians' courage and determination to survive despite centuries of repression, tyranny and foreign occupation. This blog aims to promote Estonian news, history and culture and seeks to enlighten readers about everything this unique country has to offer.

Robbie Williams Rocks Tallinn
Robbie Williams put on a spectacular show in Tallinn last night. With over 60,000 fans filling the Song Festival Grounds, it was a truly beautiful sight to see Estonian flags waved high in the air, displaying national pride. Robbie opened the show with his hit song ´Let me entertain you´ and ended with the heart warming ´Angels´. The fireworks display ensured the concert ended with a bang leaving the fans in the audience and those watching it live in cinemas across Europe, wanting more. It was definitely a concert to remember and I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that Robbie Williams is welcome back in Tallinn any time.
Unfortunately none of my photos turned out as I'd hoped but they're a good keep sake none the less.

Robbie's band voted Tallinn as their their favourite gig - by far! Yay!

Robbie Williams is Coming to Tallinn!
August is set to be an eventful month in Estonia. There's the August Dance Festival, Tallinn International Organ Festival, IX Tallinn Chamber Music Festival and then there's Robbie Williams.
In his only concert to be performed in Northern Europe, British pop star Robbie Williams is set to rock the stage at the Song Festival Grounds on August 20. The concert is part of his "Take the Crown - Stadium Tour 2013" and won't be performed in neighbouring cities such as Helsinki, St.Petersburg or Stockholm. Tallinn is it!
I'm pleased with Robbie's choice of date - performing on the Day of Restoration of Independence. It's going to be the biggest party in town!
Am I going? Yes of course I am! I don't like to miss a good party!

Estonian Writer - Peeter Lindsaar
Estonia has produced many great writers. Anton Hansen Taamsaare, Jaan Kross and Oskar Luts have all made outstanding contributions to Estonian literature. Perhaps one of the most famous Estonian writers who produced many acclaimed works whilst in exile is Peeter Lindsaar. He began his literary career in Australia during the 1950s and published ten books which have won praise in Estonian communities throughout the world.
Peeter Lindsaar had an eventful life which is often reflected in his writings.
Brief biography
Peeter Lindsaar, the son of a farmer, was born in Vรตrumaa in 1906. He completed his secondary education in Valga in 1927 before entering military service. In 1931 he graduated from the Tallinn Officers' College as a second lieutenant of infantry. From 1937-1938 Peeter studied at Tartu University in the faculty of philosphy and then from 1938-1941 he studied law. In 1941 he returned to active military service until the end of the Second World War. From 1947-1948 he lived in Germany and worked as a journalist for Estonian newspapers before emigrating to Australia in January 1949. Peeter had a very loving relationship with his wife but unfortunately they were unable to have children. He retired in 1971 and died in Sydney in 1990.
Peeter Lindsaar has been critically acclaimed as one of the most outstanding Estonian writers in exile. Some of his works have been translated into English, Latvian, German, Finnish, Lithuanian and Dutch.

I'm quite fond of the work of Peeter Lindsaar. Perhaps it's because he's my grandmother's cousin!

Estonian Inspiration - "The Bank of Happiness"
The internet is a marvellous invention. It enables you to stay in touch with the people you love who may live miles away, complete important transactions expediently and above all provides access to education and knowledge which would otherwise be unavailable. It really does open up your world.
Last night I came across a new innovative website (Estonian - of course!) called "The Bank of Happiness". Essentially, it's a a goodwill website in which people can offer free services or advice to others with the aim of bringing a bit of sunshine into their lives.
The website was created by Estonian psychologist Airi Kivi aimed to help bridge the gap in society between human caring and economic well being. On her website Kivi says, 'many people want to help others but simply don't know how'. The answer can be found here. "The Bank of Happiness" can be used as the vehicle to reach out and help others. Many people offer services such as language assistance, relationship advice or even give free massages. The possibilities are endless and the benefit of doing a good deed brings happiness to both parties.
After reading about "The Bank of Happiness" I liked the premise so much that I signed up for an account straight away. It's exactly my type of thing. Now, all I need to do is think about how I could possibly contribute. I'm sure the ideas will come in time!

I'm sure many smiles and good thoughts will result from the "Bank of Happiness."
